You bought something from Abercrombie & Fitch or received one of their items as a gift. For some reason or other, you want to return it—because it doesn’t fit, didn’t meet your expectations, or realized you didn’t need it anymore.

Abercrombie & Fitch has a fair return policy, but like all stores, it does have terms and conditions for replacing or refunding merchandise.

Here’s your complete guide to knowing what items you can return, the deadline for returns, and the process you need to go through.

Can I return Abercrombie & Fitch items within 60 days?

Yes, you can return Abercrombie & Fitch items from 30 to 60 days after purchase if you bought them from an official United States store location.

If you bought it abroad, or from an international online store that is run by another affiliate, then you have to follow the returns policy of that particular store.

Abercrombie & Fitch is not liable if the non-US store refuses to honor the refund after 30 days.

Can I return Abercrombie & Fitch items after 60 days?

If you bought the item at a United States store and can provide a receipt, you may be able to qualify for a store credit.

You cannot exchange the item or get a cash refund.

What are the requirements to get a refund or exchange?

The item must be in its original condition. That means that the tag is intact, and there is no visible damage on the item itself.

You must also be able to present the sales receipt or invoice.

This applies to all Abercrombie & Fitch items, regardless of whether you return it within the 60-day period, or after.

What is the official Abercrombie & Fitch return policy?

Ideally, you should return or exchange the merchandise within 30 days of purchase.  You have to go to the same store where it was bought, and it should be in its original condition and have the original receipt.

If these terms are met, you can either get the identical item, exchange it for something else, get a refund, or get a store credit. The refund is based on the value reflected on the receipt—so if you bought it on sale, you can’t get a refund for the whole price.

And while Abercrombie & Fitch has offshoot brands like Hollister Co., and Gilly Hicks, you can’t return across the brands. In other words, you can’t exchange an Abercrombie & Fitch item for a Hollister, Co. item.

Note that after the 30-day deadline, the restrictions and requirements for returns become tighter.

Can I redeem a gift card for cash?

No. Abercrombie & Fitch will not refund a gift card or any merchandise credits unless it is specifically allowed by the state or country where you bought the item.

I lost the receipt – can I still return the item?

If you bought the item in the United States, you could show your driver’s license or any kind of government-issued ID to the store representative. He or she can access the electronic system to confirm the purchase.

However, this is a special case, and Abercrombie & Fitch will monitor the number of items you did this. The store can refuse returns if you exceed the limit for unreceipted returns.

Furthermore, without the receipt as proof of payment, the type of refund you get will also be limited. You will receive a store credit at the lowest price that the item was ever sold.

So even if you paid full price for it, but there was a time when it went on sale at 50%, then you can only receive 50%.

If you returned the item after 60 days, you may be refused outright for a store credit without a receipt.

I can’t return it to the store—can I mail it or exchange it at another branch?

No. Abercrombie & Fitch requires that you physically return the item at the store where it was purchased. Mailed items, or exchanges at other outlets, are not allowed.

The item I bought is now on sale. Can I still get a full refund?

If an item’s price has been marked down since you purchased it, you only get a refund or store credit if you return the item within 7 days.

You also need to return any complimentary items you received with it.

If you bought several things that are now on sale, the store will only refund the full price for one item.

If over 60 days have passed since the purchase, you can only get store credit for the value of the current sale price.

Can I return items I bought on sale?

If you bought items on promo (with a discount, buy 1 take 1, or free gift with purchase, or discounts after a minimum total purchase) the store will look at the qualifying purchase threshold.

This is how much you needed to pay in order to get those discounts.

If you are only returning some of the purchase and you fall below the threshold, and/or you are not returning the complimentary merchandise you received, then the refund amount will be adjusted accordingly.

If you are returning one of the items after 60 days, or if the adjusted value is lower than the value of the complimentary merchandise, then that amount can only be issued in store credits.

How easy is it to return or exchange Abercrombie & Fitch items?

For the most part, you won’t have trouble getting a refund or store credit as long as you have the receipt.

If you got it from a physical store, the customer representative will walk you through the whole thing and answer your questions—they are quite helpful and can explain your options.

If you got the item from the online store, you can apply for returns on their website. Note that online purchases may have different terms and conditions for international orders depending on the item and the distributor’s own policies.

So, you may not be able to get store credits for purchases after 30 to 60 days.

To enjoy the full benefits of Abercrombie & Fitch’s return policy, it is best to send back the item within the first month of purchase.
